Mount Temple N.S. Crowned County Champions

Mount Temple N.S. 5-5
St Josephs, Rathwire N.S. 2-6
At a windy and overcast Cusack Park, Mullingar on Thurday last, May 23, Mount Temple National School were crowned Comortas na mBun Scoil 11-a-side champions for 2013 to add to their already annexed Schools 7-a-side triumph. Having tasted bitter defeat in last years decider, the Mount Temple boys were in no mood to be denied again. An early goal by midfielder Shane Cleary after some intricate passing set the tone. With Colin Murphy master of all he surveyed, they dominated play, however brilliant goalkeeping kept Rathwire in contention. A fine individual strike from Donogh Prendergast put some daylight between the teams going into the interval on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-4. However with the advantage of the elements on the resumption and the tonic of an early goal and a point, Rathwire were right back in the game. But the Mount Temple response was swift. In line with their free flowing game plan all day, Arthur Finlay started and finished low to the net and was followed soon after by another Shane Cleary goal crashing through a forest of players. But to their credit the boys in saffron and white responded with a 1-1 salvo of their own. However, their resistance was finally broken when Thomas Dunning showed great awareness to fist low to the net, after having earlier been denied brilliantly on three occasions by the goalkeeper. Adam Mullins closed the scoring with another excellent point.
Victory was a just reward for Mt Temple, who were an outstanding team all year. Great credit to the management team of teacher and county star, Doran Harte, TJ Dunning and Jody Malynn. Also to the back-up provided by principle Ambrose McGowan and all the teaching staff. The bonfires and cavalcade through the parish were akin to any adult championship victory and emphasised the significance of the win to the school and the local Caulry club.
