Caulry GAA PRO Notes 11th Aug 2014 -

Intermediate Championship -
Caulry 2-5 :
Tubberclare  2-10
Tang was the venue for this latest Intermediate championship clash on Sunday last. On a wet and windy day, the Tubberclare side were worthy winners and will no doubt have a big say in were the Geraghty Cup rests for the winter. Once again the Caulry boys lacked the fluency and urgency in their play required for championship success.

Despite playing with the elements, Caulry went in level 4 points all at the interval. Caulry made a good start on the
resumption of play when Peter Smyth (inset) bravely beat Gary Connaughton to the flick for a tonic goal, to be followed by a point from the same source. At this stage we expected the men in red to kick on. However, we were soon dealt a double double blow. Firstly Tubberclaire got two goals in as many minutes. Then David Brookes received a black card, to be soon followed by Eoghan Grennan on another black. Caulry did equalise briefly with an expertly taken penalty by Peter Smyth, but this was as good as it got as Tubberclare tagged on the winning points . Indeed it could have been a lot worse, but for two outstanding diving saves from Joe McMahon.

Eoin Fox and Ben Moran were excellent in defence showing the necessary anticipation and aggression. Further a field Ernie Buckley justified his start, but only the ever reliable Peter Smyth looked like troubling the opposing defence.

Caulry must now beat table toppers Milltownpass in the final group game to ensure participation in the knock out stage or rely on results elsewhere, with Tubberclare favourites to go straight to the semi-final. With likely quarter final opponents anyone from three of Ballymore, Tang or Rosemount, an arduous task awaits, but one which should be greatly helped by the return of Allan Rigney, Andy O Sullivan, Michael McMahon and the Maguire brothers.
Caulry Line-Out: Joe McMahon, Eoin Fox, Damian Dolan, James Pettit, Harry Hughes (0-1),Declan Donoghue, Ben Moran, Gary Flanagan, Alan Fitzpatrick, Ernie Buckley, Eoghan Grennan , Robbie Hickey, David Brookes (0-1), Peter Smyth (2-2), Robbie Ryan (0-1)
Subs used: Sean Doyle for  Brookes (bc), Ben Kenny for Hickey, Brian Mullarney for Grennan (bc).
