Junior Championship
Caulry 1-13
Tubberclair 3-12
Our juniors got their championship campaign underway when they played host to Tubberclair on Sunday afternoon last.
Our lads were first off the mark after a side-line ball from Ernie Buckley found Andy O’Sullivan who opened the scoring tally. Cillian Nagle looked assured in goal as he dealt well with early challenges from the opposition as Tubberclair drew level on the 3rd minute. Both sides spurned some scoring opportunities in the minutes to follow as the next score of the game came on the 10th minute as Anthony Allen rattled the opposition’s net to edge Caulry in front. However, the visitors to the park responded well as they raised two white flags and were unlucky to hit the post on the 12th minute. Allen slotted over a free as our lads struggled to get the ball into the inside forwards despite having a strong breeze on their backs. Tubberclair began to punch holes in the Caulry defence as they tagged on another point. The opposition then catapulted themselves into the lead as they hit the back of the Caulry net on the 17th minute. Ciaran Allen defended well as the teams shared six points before the interval to leave Caulry trailing 1-8 to 1-4 at the interval.
Colin Murphy raced out of the tracks early in the second half and was unlucky as his attempt on goal rattled the post. Buckley and Alan Daly combined well as Murphy then settled for a fine point from play. The teams traded scores as Allen pointed for Caulry. Tubberclair then hit a purple patch between the 36th and 39th as they added on a goal and a trio of points. O’Sullivan kept Caulry in touch with two points, one from a free and one from open play. Nagle again denied the opposition a goal on the 43rd minute as another O’Sullivan free cut the deficit to six. Good play from Murphy and Adam Mullins enabled O’Sullivan to add another two by the end of the third quarter. However, our lads were unable to build of this momentum as Tubberclair raced up the field and hit the Caulry net for a third time. Ben Kenny drew one back with his point from play. Ultimately, Tubberclair proved to be the stronger side as a late pointed-free from Peter Smyth saw the opposition run out worthy winners on a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-13.
