Division 1 Minor League
Caulry 0-4
Maryland/Tang 2-11
Our minor lads got their league campaign under way on Sunday morning last when they played host to a strong Maryland/Tang side in wet, slippery conditions.
The opposition were first off the mark with a pointed-free on the 2nd minute. Our lads were guilty of some sloppy possession as they struggled to grasp the wet conditions. A second converted-free for Maryland/Tang doubled the deficit by the end of the opening five minutes. Our lads registered their first score of the game as Ciaran Geoghegan settled for a point when a goal looked very much on. Eoin Shortall put in a good display in the backline as the Caulry forward-line failed to push on, missing scoreable chances. The Maryland/Tang goalie then denied Adam Donoghue a goal. Darren Browne levelled proceedings on the 10th minute with a fine point from play. The homeside spurned two more goal chances as Maryland/Tang pounced for two quick points. Colin Murphy drew on back on the 22nd minute. However, the opposition rallied on, scoring an unanswered 1-2 to leave our lads trailing 1-6 to 0-3 at the halftime whistle.
The second half followed in much the same vein with our lads slow to settle and missing some early scoring opportunities. A converted-free from Murphy opened the second half scoring tally. Our lads tried hard against a strong Maryland/Tang defence. However, the opposition pushed on with 1-1 in quick succession to leave nine points the margin by the end of the third quarter. Maryland/Tang impressed in the closing stages of the game as their hard work paid dividends in the form of four unanswered points. Ultimately, our lads chased the deficit throughout as the opposition ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-4.
