Division 2 Minor Championship Final
Caulry 2-9
Tubberclair 0-6
Our minor lads were crowned Division 2 champions when they ran out worthy winners over neighbours Tubberclair in this year’s final on Sunday last.
Both sides were slow to settle in the early stages of the game, exchanging wides at opposite ends of the field. Our lads got off the mark after a superb ball in from Sean Woods found Liam Doyle who set Darren Brown up for a goal on the 2nd minute. The Tubberclair lads then drew one back with a fine point from play. Eoin Shortall impressed in the backline as Tubberclair failed to push on, missing some scoring opportunities. Brown then kicked his first point of the game on the 8th minute after combining well with Matthew Nally. Jack Sheehan brought off a great intercept as the ball was worked brilliantly up the field and slotted over the bar by Nally. The opposition tried hard against a good Caulry defence and were denied a goal by the end of the first quarter, with the resulting ‘45’ not paying dividends as it trailed off to the right side of the post. Our lads worked tirelessly throughout with Adam Mullins and Dylan Lowry defending well. Colin Murphy tapped over a pointed-free on the 28th minute after good work from Sean Fox to leave Caulry leading 1-3 to 0-1 at the halftime whistle.
Our lads were first off the mark again in the second half with a fine point from Doyle after some great combined teamwork from Nally and Brown. However, Tubberclair responded well with two fine points on the 34th and 35th minute. Our lads dug deep and never lost their cool as Sean Woods riffled the opposition’s net on the 41st minute to put Caulry in the driving seat. Lee Guinan Malone and Eoin Shortall done well when put under pressure as Doyle registered his second point of the evening after a good pass from Cialan Dollard. Nally kicked the next score of the game after good work from Adam Donoghue and Fox. A superb score from Colin Murphy saw Caulry lead by ten on the 50th minute. The Caulry defence done well in the closing stages of the game with Shortall denying Tubberclair a goal as they settled for a point on the 52nd minute. Tubberclair reduced the deficit by one on the 59th minute with another fine point. However, our lads proved they were the hungrier side on the evening as substitute Liam Malynn kicked two fine points when introduced. A Tubberclair point late into injury time ensured Caulry the win on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-6. After the game, captain Colin Murphy was presented with the Division 2 MFC cup on behalf of his teammates.
Congratulations and well done to our minor squad and their management team of Kevin Connaughton, Richie Higgins and John Burke on winning!
Many thanks also to the parents for their help throughout the year and to all who helped out on the day.
