U16 League
Caulry 3-9
The Downs 1-11
Caulry started off their U16 campaign with a trip away to The Downs on Sunday morning last.
Our lads were slow out of the blocks which was to be expected in our first game. The Downs raced into a three point lead early on but Caulry slowly pegged them back with a brace of points from Alan Malynn which followed with a goal from the same player to put Caulry in front. Our back line were really on top in this period with great defending from Tiernan O’Donovan, Sean Murphy and Alan Lynam . Tom Cloonan was back in his customary number 6 position and was back near his best. He made a brilliant run up the field which ended up with him being dragged to the ground and Caulry nailing another free kick from Malynn. Caulry pushed up on the opposition kick out which resulted in our second goal from Paul Hogan. He was picked out brilliantly by Shane Lawless with a defence-splitting ball. Caulry led at half time on a score line of 2-4 to 0-4.
In the second half The Downs upped the ante and picked of the first three points before Aaron Murray replied with a goal for Caulry. Playing against the breeze now Caulry were struggling to get attacks going but Senan Baker and Aaron Murray were putting in a great shift in midfield with Senan fielding some good ball when we were under pressure. Both teams exchanged points before an injury to our keeper forced Ruairi to retire and not long after, The Downs rattled the back of the net. However, Caulry were not going to be denied and points from Malynn, Murray and Tadgh Baker in reply meant Caulry won on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-11.
