Caulry GAA PRO Notes 24th March 2014 -

All-County Football League Division 1
Caulry played host to Mullingar Shamrocks senior team on Sunday last and made a winning start to life in Division 1. Both teams were slow to settle, with Caulry having the aid of the
tricky breeze in the first half. While there were some good passing movements, the shot selection was not up to a required standard. However some good free taking from the ever reliable Peter Smyth (inset on right) got Caulry off the mark. Two superb scores from Stephen Woods and Alan Fitzpatrick left us leading 5 points to 1 at the interval.

Both sides were guilty of early misses on the resumption before an inspirational point from county man, Damian Dolan lifted the crowd and team. The inevitable goal for Shamrocks arrived and one would have felt that the greater experience and guile would see the town side home. However, instead it was the men in red and white who upped the tempo and showed the greater tenacity. A great point from young Alan Daly, who was excellent when introduced kept Caulry in the driving seat. Anytime Mullingar, got a score, Caulry were able to reply to keep their noses in front and collect a very valuable two league points.

This was a good all round display by the home team and the manner in which they closed out the game against highly rated opponents will stand them in good stead for the year ahead. Philip Dully proved an excellent and safe goalkeeper, behind a rock solid Michael McMahon. In the half back line the class and county experience of duo, Damian Dolan and Kevin Maguire (inset on left) was to prove crucial time and again. Gary Flanagan and Alan Fitzpatrick held sway against a variety of combinations in the vital midfield sector, with Peter Smyth and Stephen Woods showing well in attack.

Caulry’s next league outing in this division is scheduled for April 6 away to Tyrrellspass.
