U16 Championship
Caulry 2-6
Coralstown/Kinnegad
5-17
Our U16 lads
bowed out of this year’s championship with a comprehensive defeat to a strong
Coralstown/Kinnegad side on Friday evening last.
The teams traded
early frees to get off the mark inside the opening two minutes. A quickly-taken
free from Alan Malynn found Senan Baker who riffled the back of the opposition’s
net to put Caulry in front. Our lads were unlucky to miss a second goal on the
5th minute as the Coralstown/Kinnegad lads raised two white flags at
the other end of the field. A converted-free from Malynn kept Caulry in front
on the 12th minute before the opposition slotted over 0-4 to take
the lead. Despite good fielding from Luke Buckley, it was the opposition who
dominated and added their first goal of the evening. Our lads were then rewarded
a penalty which after an initial shot from Malynn riffled back of the crossbar
was slotted into the net by Baker. Another goal opportunity was recycled well
and tapped over the bar by James Carey to leave just one point between the sides.
However, the opposition finished strong, adding two scores to lead 1-9 to 2-3
at the break.
Our lads
raced out of the tracks with a superb score from Rory Mullins early in the
second half. The opposition responded well added two quickfire goals, leaving
Caulry with a large deficit to catch. Olan Healy worked hard in defence as scores
from Malynn and Carey tagged two back. Unfortunately, that was as good as it
got for our lads as Coralstown/Kinnegad rallied on in the final quarter of the
game to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 5-17 to 2-6.
