Leinster U13 League 2017
Caulry 8-4
Oldcastle 2-8
Caulry U13s got their Leinster league off to a winning start in Oldcastle Co. Meath on Saturday afternoon. Playing into the breeze in the first half it took the Caulry players a few minutes to settle into the game and thanks to some fine defending by Cian Heavin were only 2 points behind after 10 minutes. Our first score of the season was one to remember. After a great interception by Aaron Murray the ball was played quickly up the pitch by 5 different players before finding Tadhg Baker, who beat his marker and showed great composure finishing the move with an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. This score settled the away team and with Oisin Shortall and Alan Lynam working hard in midfield our second goal from Conor Hynes was just rewards for the team’s efforts. Oldcastle showed their fighting spirit and started to get more possession but thanks to some great blocks by Ben Claffey and tight marking by Harry Stuart Trainor Oldcastle were not able to turn their possession into scores. This was to prove costly for the home team as Caulry netted twice more before the break with Joey Berry and Paul Hogan applying the finishing touches. Once again Oldscastle came back at Caulry and tapped over 3 unanswered points, and it could have been more only for two wonder saves by Caulry goalkeeper Ian Malone. Following the break it was Caulry who got the first score of the half and it was another goal, with Brendan Kelly McCormack raising the green flag. Oldcastle showed their never say die attitude and put a lot of pressure on the Caulry defence but Tiarnan O'Donovan and Michael Mc Donnald were more than up to the task. Even with the advantage of the breeze Caulry were finding it hard to get the ball forward. Josh Rattigan lead by example up front showing great determination to win some balls when the odds were stacked against him. Supported by Andrew Stuart Trainor and Daniel Doyle in the fullforward line Caulry soon found their scoring range again. More goals from Paul Hogan and Conor Hynes put the game beyond doubt. Oldcastle were to stage a late rally and got a brace of well-deserved goals but fine individual points from Brandan Kelly McCormack and Conor Hynes were followed by a well taken goal for Tiarnan O'Donovan. Overall it was a very impressive start to the year and the U13's look forward to welcoming Cellbridge to Caulry in two weeks’ time.
