Division 4 ACFL
Caulry 1-11
Athlone 1-9
In poor, slippery conditions on Sunday morning last, our junior side had to settle for a draw as they travelled to Pairc Chiarain for their second Division 4 ACFL outing.
Athlone were first off the mark with a pointed-free on the 3rd minute. Loughlin Casey defended well as Peter Smyth got Caulry’s first score of the game. The opposition worked hard and kicked four unanswered points to take the lead. The teams traded scores with Smyth accounting for Caulry’s second point. Some good fielding from Declan Donohoe enabled Andy O’Sullivan to rattle the back of the opposition’s net on the 20th minute. Darren Hynds and Ernie Buckely defended well as another point from O’Sullivan levelled proceedings. Three unanswered points from O’Sullivan and Keith McMenamin left Caulry leading by a goal at the interval on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-6.
Athlone got off to a good start early in the second half with three quick points to level proceedings by the 42nd minute. However, our lads soon found their feet as McCormack and O’Sullivan pointed to put Caulry in front. Smyth kicked the next two scores of the game to add to Caulry’s lead. A point from McCormack on the 58th minute left five points the margin. However, Athlone got a controversial goal two minutes into injury time and after looking at the ref’s tally, it was decided that the match finished a draw with a final score of 1-9 to 1-9.
